First full-length novel released by Hwang Seok-Young in twelve years, living a life of exile and imprisonment, An Old Garden acquired the support of the reputed 90 year Japanese publisher, Iwanami Books. The author conceived this novel in German asylum since the North Korea visiting incident in 1989, and during imprisonment upon his return. Through a variety of forms such as letters, memorandums, and documents, it is a narration of the mental state and lives of the two protagonists, a young couple in love in a time of upheaval (post-1980 Korea and the collapse of communism). Starting with Hwang Seok-Young¡¯s Strange Lands in the 80¡¯s, Iwanami Books boasts a large publication of Korean short stories, children¡¯s verse, and folk songs; An Old Garden resumes that publishing tradition and hence draw Japanese attention anew. -

Explanations on articles like Korean traditional costume, janggu (an hourglass-shaped drum), buk (drum), and fan, complement illustrations that capture the feel of traditional music for foreigners. Rather than relating themes of stories of a serious nature, each poem by Jeong Hyeon-Jong blooms as though a flower or a tree. Such a claim hardly dismisses any profound messages they may hold, but instead underlines the fact that everything around us is a thing in itself and, itself the message. Likewise, this winner of the Fourth Daesan Literary Awards in 1996 depicts self and all of creation as an organic hole sharing a cosmic soul. Jeong¡¯s is an ecological imagination concerned with the empathy between objects and the exploration of oneness,; therefore, man and nature in Jeong¡¯s world exist in co-relation to one another, to emphasize the ecological love on which dialogic imagination is based. -

This is a collection of short stories which include such major works of Yi Chong-Jun as Canto del oeste coreano, La luz del Sonido (The Light of Sound), El peregrino de Sonhakdong (Seonhak-dong Wanderer), and others. In his short stories, which are rich with the strong emotions of the southern provinces of Korea, Yi Chong-Jun provides a description which combines the Korean idea of ¡°Han,¡± a sort of stifling feeling of sadness, with the beautiful nature of Korean and ¡°Chang,¡± which is a traditional Korean rhythm. As Canto del oeste coreano (Seopyunjae) has already been made into a movie, it is expected that this work will increase interest in Korean literature among Spanish speakers. Especially as it was the recipient of the Spanish publisher Trotta¡¯s Publishing Award, it is expected that the advertising campaign will have twice the usual success.
